Background

Digital tools for institutional clients had not evolved in the way other industries have. J.P. Morgan Asset Management's digital offerings for this audience were limited to complex internal CA dashboards. They needed a customized, tailored self-service experience for their investors to meet their needs, cross-sell product, convert prospects, and deepen client relationships.


Financial tasks and decision-making in the institutional space involves multiple people and involves rigid governance processes. Most of the tasks happened over email and phone. J.P. Morgan Asset Management needed a collaborative digital tool to streamline these slow and error-prone tasks.

Approach

My team worked with the J.P. Morgan Institutional teams to understand the needs and workflows of institutional investors. We created in-depth user journeys and process flows for these sometimes months-long tasks (most of which took place over phone or email), and started to map them to a digital experience. We built these digital workflows on top of a robust account portal featuring account visualizations, analytics, and tailored insights.

Task workflows

Morgan Institutional introduced optimized digital workflows for complex tasks such as new mandate onboarding and cash flow requests. Traditionally, these were handled through email and phone, sometimes taking months to complete. The digitized tasks enabled the reduction of errors on the J.P. Morgan side that lead to a cost savings of over $1 million the first year alone.

Peer analysis

We introduced an incredibly valuable peer analysis feature which enables investors to see how their plans compare to those of their peers across an array of metrics, including asset allocation, return on assets, liability hurdles, liquidity analysis, and more. Investors can download these findings into a customized pdf.

Impact

Launched in 2020, Morgan Institutional quickly onboarded 50+ clients with over 1,000 users. The intuitive, streamlined experience was described by one client as "a game changer in the institutional space. I may move more money from other firms to J.P. Morgan."
